Gender bender babies Part II

Elsewhere says "Does Junior look like a 'boy' already? That amazes me."

So I've been doing a bit of a survey, whenever strangers accost me in the street ("Oooh! Are they twins?" etc). 8 out of 8 respondents guessed Junior's gender correctly. 5 out of 8 guessed Lucky correctly; the other three said "I can't tell" (with great embarrassment, like I would be offended!)

So here is a recent photo of the babies in non-gender specific gear. Of course some of you know the babies so you can't vote. And no scrolling down to cheat!

So, Baby A on the left; baby B on the right.

Can you tell their genders?

Well, GENDER is socially constructed. As in societal. As in the traits we assign or the way our culture acts/reacts to us. But SEX is the biological issue. So I guess you're asking which SEX they are? As in one has a penis and the other has a vagina/vulva, right? One is male, one is female. That's SEX. Gender, on the other hand, is an expression, it differs across societies and it has differed throughout history. Sorry to go off, but this is my pet peeve. All those forms that you have to fill out where they ask your gender? What they really want to know is your SEX! I'm a female. That's my sex. But I'm boyish, a boi, trans, androgynous, etc. That's my gender expression. So, who knows how your babies will choose to express their gender, or how society will shape their gender. But as for SEX, one is a male and one is a female. And I certainly can't tell from the photo! :)

Was that a diatribe? Because it read like a diatribe.

I might just go hide under the quilt (quietly, so I don't make any linguistic errors) for a few days...

i can tell who's who cos i've been following the blog, but otherwise, i think i wouldn't know...

and 'sex' doesn't rhyme with 'bender', right? and 'bender' alliterates nicely with 'babies', so i think you were being quite poetic.

I honestly can't tell from looking at their faces but if forced to guess I'd say yellow baby is the boy - and that would be based on 'him' being bigger. The other one is 'petite'.

I have to confess, I had the same thought as anonymous...

That's the whole point of "gender bender", right? Confounding social expectations of behaviour and appearance associated with a particular biological sex. You can't be a "sex bender" without an accident of birth or elaborate surgery ;)

I think baby A is lucky and baby B is junior... am I right? I'm writing this before I read the comments so I won't be influenced, so now I will read them to see if I'm right.

My first thought was that the baby in yellow was Junior. It's partly because of size but also because of the slightly coquettish expression on the babe in green's face. That probably says more about how I construct gender than anything else...I was a big baby like the kid in yellow, after all.
